JW - yes and they have the right to do that. It is a very disgusting and repulsive act to commit BUT you are guaranteed that right by the 1st amendment. People also have the right to abortions. The freedoms granted to us Americans are to be appreciated and respected - even when they oppose your values and morals.

Jimmy listen, The US Flag Code which is public law states that the prefered way to dispose of a flag is by burning it. If "conservatives" are so against flag burning, they should be against wearing US Flag clothing, Flags on display that touch anything below them, Flags flown from cars in an inproper matter. Read the US Flag Code and you'll find out that more half of what is done to the flag as a show of patriotism in fact is nothing but disrespect towards the flag, yet no one seems to care because they are uneducated.

A strict, fundamentalist view of the American Constitution supports the view that Natural Rights inhereing in Individuals are inviolate. The Constitution itself is a body of principles that protect Rights by reigning in state and government power. To adopt a prohibitionary clause is anathemic to this ideal, as demonstrated by the failed experiment of Prohibition early last century.
The Constitution should not be triffled with lightly. It is not built to be easily or whimsically amended when a "hot topic" in the (pseudo-)conservative pop-culture decide to get a new bug up their posteriors.
Real conservatives don't run to fill-out triplicate copies of the 'amend the constitution' 10-stroke-95-forms at the local 'change-your-constitution' office in DC. Conservatives that are true to their values will instill in their homes and families the value of pride in their nation and its symbols so that future generations revere, rather than distain our flag.

Since conservatives see this as a sacred object. It is tough to defend this right, and to see others want to burn the flag of our nation. The first amendment should have limitations (yelling fire in a crowded theatre. Although liberals would probably defend that one too.) People in this country just need to start using common sense. We can not defend everything everyone does all the time can we?

I am Libertarian, which is considered extreme right-wing, however we support the right to burn the stars and stripes. It is most definately covered in the 1st ammendment, which is why politicians are pushing for a constitutional ammendment to ban it. Funny thing about constitutional ammendments--every single one of them, with exception to prohibition (which was later overturned) has been about expanding rights and freedoms to the populace, not circumventing them. The conservative voters (not the leaders) are so brainwashed, just like their democrat counterparts are--they will buy and drink any and all kool-aid fed them by their elected leaders and the scare tactics they use to keep people hooked on it. It's amazing to me that people don't see the similarity between the United States today and pre-war nazi Germany. Taking away freedoms to increaese "security"--convince people that they are not patriots unless they support the repealing of civil rights! It's absurd. Nobody faught and died for a piece of cloth, but our soldiers did die for the ideals with which this nation was founded. Our nation was formed by the scattered group of rebells who rejected their government--our nation has a rich history of protest. It's actually quite un-American to be against the burning of the flag.

Waste of police resources. Millions of people will burn Liberian flags, get arrested, and smartass New York lawyers will point out that the flag has only 1 star and 11 stripes, and the cops can't count.

There's the property rights argument. Why should the government regulate my ability to purchase cloth, form it into a pattern, and then dispose of it (assuming I do not infringe or endanger anyone else's property rights by doing so) as I see fit?
I find flag-burners repugnant, as such protesters abuse their freedom. But taking away freedoms also insults the heroes who defend freedom.

If it is done in a safe manner as part of an organized protest, then there is not much to argue about. It's just one of the annoying things we have to accept in a free society. However, I wonder when the breaking point is going to come when Americans are going to start kicking peoples *** when such things occur. Especially when Illegal Aliens do it. No one has ever done this in front of me, if I'm ever given the opportunity I'd plant my foot firmly in their mouth!

Yes but why waste my words.
Bottom line, I served my country. Im a combat vet. (Desert Shield/Storm) and quite frankly, it would sadden me greatly. A flag is NOT just a flag.
I would glady go to jail for kicking the sh*t out of a flag burner. Id be a hero in fact. But, I live in the most conservative state in the union so I would imagine the life expectancy in Idaho for a liberal flag burner would be about 2 seconds.
So, if your going to burn a flag, come to Idaho to do it. And, wrap yourself in it first.
