Charles Milles Manson (born November 12, 1934) is an American convict and career criminal, most famous for his actions in the late 1960s. He has spent most of his adult life in prison, initially for offenses such as car theft, forgery and credit card fraud. He also worked some time as a pimp. In the late 1960s, he became the leader of a group known as "The Family", and masterminded several brutal murders; most notably that of movie actress Sharon Tate (wife of movie director Roman Polanski), who was eight and a half months pregnant at the time. He was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder in what came to be known as the "Tate-La Bianca case", named after the victims, although he was not accused of committing the murders in person. He is serving a life sentence in California's Corcoran State Prison, and will be up for parole in 2007 at the age of 73. Manson has always maintained his innocence of the crimes.

Manson was also friends with several notable musicians before the murders were committed, including Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys, and was a marginally successful musician himself who recorded several albums and whose songs have been covered by many artists.

Since his trial and conviction, Manson's name and image have been integrated into American pop culture, generally as a symbol of ultimate evil. Both have been used by many artists (mostly musicians), including Marilyn Manson who derived his last name from Charles Manson.

Really, you don't know? Well, he was a short and ugly little man who was very charismatic and actually became a kind of cult leader in the late 60's. He used a twisted version of his own wanna be rock-star and I love the Beatles philosophy to create a world for his followers where all rich people (richer than them anyway, as they were all unemployed and ripe to be cult folk) were 'piggies' and needed to be killed.

So, in 1969 about 4 of his followers were sent by him up into the hills and homes of Beverly Hills where they killed 4 people (one of whom was the pregnant wife of Roman Polanski) and then also killed two other folks later.

The prosecution of them for the murders was a snap as they were all dunces and left evidence everywhere. The tough job was nailing Manson as their leader and tracking and explaining his sick brain to a jury. This fell to Vincent Bugliosi (who wrote a great book about it called 'Helter Skelter') who got Manson put away. To this day Manson is an eerie (although somewhat attention seeking and pathetic) figure in solitary confinement who will die in prison.

A great movie was made about him as well in the 70's, starring Steve Railsback as Manson.
