This is not Indian in general, but more specifically a hindu culture. This culture and tradition is the oldest in the world. And we are still proud that we still follow it despite of westernised infiltration.
The indication is the respect, not the male dominant society. As we travel the whole India we feel the presence of respect to the woman everywhere.
When a woman wears Bindi (Sindoor) on her forehead or mangalsutra/bangal, it expresses her sacrifice and reponsibility to a family not a slave to a particular man. And Indian men are very much aware of the fact.

There is no direct way to recognise married man in the whole world exept in some few tribal societies. But there is a difference in Indian man and western man. Just watch closely his behaviour and dealings with other females. It may take a little more time to do so. But once you come accross an American(particularly) or western European male, the comparison becomes easier. They are used to the belief that woman comes and go as their society is acccustomed to it. But here in India we believe that the woman kind is precious. Our expression shows it.
Exeptions excused for the neo-urban culture in India.

A married man cant switch off his mobile ever, thats a sign. If he did, he is going to get a beating when he got home.

Any physical sign of being married, smile on the face, well some of us are lucky.
