There are some antivirus programs that let you know when it is time to update it. My antivirus is norton antivirus, which lets me know when ther are updates available. Being that yours doesn't do that, you would probably have to go buy a newer version of the one you currently have or ask the people that work in the store. They are very knowledgable at CompUSA.

This depends on your antivirus system.

Consider using AVG Free AntiVirus if you don't already. It's free and probably just as good as Norton and Mcafee (both of these programs are constant hacking targets and may slow down your internet experience).

If you want to use AVG Free go to http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 and download it. After installing, simply start up the program. There is a huge "Check for Updates" button you can push to make sure your version is up to date.

I would also recommend that you install Ad-Aware, a free Anti-Spyware program: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Using these 2 programs you can provide yourself with free, easy to use spyware and virus protection. I have used these two programs together with over a year and have had no virus/spyware problems.

If you are using a different Antivirus/Spyware program and don't want to switch, look in your options menu. Aquiring updates should not be difficult, however if you're using a paid service and your subscription runs out you may not be able to receive updates. If you can find no option or button to check for updates. I recommend you contact your program's tech support if this happens.

PS: If you do install AVG Free, be sure to remove Norton or other paid subscrition services, as the two may conflict and bog down your internet connection. Also, turn on Windows Firewall (if you have it) after uninstalling McAfee or Norton. These programs often disable Windows Firewall and may not not restore it when removed.

To turn on Windows firewall go to--> Start ---> Control Panel---> Security Center---> If Windows FireWall is off click on it and check the "On" Button, Then click OK.

All good anti virus programs should update their signature files daily. The free ones, like AVG or F Prot, only update twice a week. This is an update that should be automatic, you may need to check the settings in the management console of the program - to access that, double click on the icon in your systme tray in the bottom right hand corner of your desktop. If it does not have an update feature, get rid of it and install a good AV program, Panda is the best AV program today.

It should have an "update" or "live update" feature. Depends which antivirus program you are using. You didn't provide any details.

some times the antivius will update itself or it should have an update link which can be done manually through your program. if it says select a folder or the Internet then choose the Internet.finally it will update and run a virus scan.
