It depends on which e-mail service or desktop e-mail client you use. Web base e-mail services include: Yahoo! mail, Gmail, Hotmail...etc. Desktop e-mail clients include: Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Eudora...etc.

Concerning web base e-mail services, it can also depend on which web browser you use, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Encryption of e-mail is moderate difficult to setup and use. It involves several steps. In addition, both sender and recipient usually need to use the same encryption system. The gold standard of free encryption is Pretty Good Privacy (PGP).

To get some basic knowledge of how it works, please read the following articles:

1. "How to encrypt your email" -- lifehacker.com (http://www.lifehacker.com/software/top/how-to-encrypt-your-email-180878.php)

2. "How It Works: Encryption" -- pcworld.com (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,15230-page,1/article.html)

Believe it or not, but it is easier to setup encryption for Mozilla's Firefox and Thunderbird than it is for Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Outlook or Outlook Express.

There is an easier way to encrypt your e-mail without having your recipient using the same encryption system, no private keys or public keys. Cryptainer is a freeware which encrypts your emails and it decrypts automatically once it is received by the recipient. Got to Cryptainer's FAQ website and read about it. There is a download link at the bottom of the page. This method is easier to use but it is not as secure as PGP. (http://www.cypherix.co.uk/cryptainerpe/faqs.htm)

I guess a lot of people use PGP but it's a bit confusing and tricky to figure out. It's almost too much trouble because the other person needs the public key, etc. but I have used various encryption programs like CryptCat which you can chat with someone with blowfish encryption thru a CMD/DOS window which is very nice and pretty easy, you should try it.

I use PGP (stands for Pretty Good Privacy). They have been around for a while now and they let you try out their software for free! As for being easy to use, that's a relative question. I have found that PGP is easy to configure and use but that the people you send e-mails to also need to be educated... They will need to download and install your public key before they can open your e-mails, this will confuse, and in my case has confused many recipients, nevertheless I still use it!
