When you first started practicing you were supposed to go out to the "wood shed" so you wouldn't disturb others. Practicing is still referred to as "woodshedding". Its called an "axe" because you went out to the wood shed and used your "axe" to learn your "chops". The term "axe" can apply to any instrument - trumpet, saxophone, etc. Musicians will ask "what's your axe?" and that is what they mean.

To add to what Paul H stated - Woodshed => Axe=> led to "Cutting Heads" or a Guitar Duel.

Watch the movie "Crossroads" w/ Ralph Macchio - the "cuttin' heads" sequence at the end is some fo the greatest cinema ever created.

Now I am guessing, but maybe it has something to do with the fact that we "grind" axes, and when certain people play music and guitars they GRIND- their hips? Also- some people kill things with axes, and some music kills.
(In a good way!)

The idiotic 80's relation to Mythology and Thor and thunder and all that corn ball crap everyone once thought was so damn cool.

Hence the justification for men prancing around like long haired fairies. Everyone wanted to be a "God of thunder." Some people took it just a bit too far...

Like Danzig and King Diamond and Some other tools I can't remember at the moment.
