Riding a motorcycle presents the same amount of danger as driving a car, getting on an airplane, and so on. I actually feel safer on my motorcycle because I know I can avoid dangers quicker and easier. You must always ride with safety in mind...always assume that the worst will happen, therefore if it does, you have already played out the scenario in your head and you can avoid it. Always ride defensively. Your wife is probably taking the perspective that if you get involved in a collision, because you are so exposed, you will sustain a great amount of bodily injury. In this aspect, her point does carry weight. Unfortunately, that is the nature of the game. Of course, it goes without saying, that you should always wear full safety gear. However, going back to my initial point, I believe that on a motorcycle you are more likely to be able to successfully evade any dangers to begin with, due to the fact that you have a complete different attitude when riding vs. driving. There are millions of riders out there that have ridden their entire lives. Look at how many car accidents there are out there. I think probably 90% of riders go through this with their loved ones. I was lucky and I met my girlfriend many years after I was riding, so I have less arguments to deal with. Be safe, and level-headed and start slow. Enjoy the ride. Good luck.

Riding is great fun, but there are risks. I have found that it is mostly from other motorists. Lets face the facts, if you have a car to car accident, you will come out better off than if you have a car and motorcycle accident. You have to remain very alert when riding and always take a defensive approach. I have been riding for 2 years and the close calls are mostly due to auto motorists not paying attention. Be alert, keep safe distance, ride on familiar roads and don't be a "hot dog". Much much enjoyment and a feeling of freedom that is without parallel. Go for it, just do it safely.

Statistically a biker is 9 times more likely to have an injury than a car driver. But this includes the accident figures for young men with more hormones than sense riding bikes too fast for them.
A bike can be safer because:
-the brakes are better
-the bike is more manoeverable and can steer out of trouble
-your don't have the distractions of a radio or a cellphone
-a biker is more aware of the traffic risks than a car driver
-you can accelerate away from a dangerous situation
All that said, if I had a young family I would need to be sure that they would be insured if I sustained a serious injury and could not work. But then you need that insurance even driving a car.

I've been riding motorcycle for years, in Tokyo(very bad traffic), Knoxville(open wide and can go fast), and Cincinnati(many careless drivers). From my experience, the most important thing for riding a motorcycle on streets is "Read the traffic." Keep eye on 360degree and guess/imagine what they(cars) are gonna do. No I don't own a moped, but I own a ZX-11(for 5+yrs) as a daily driver and have been accident free.

Great advice from everyone. I can only add that you become more aware of every possible threat once you have ridden a bike. You see every small rock on the road, every pothole, oil mark. You have to look ahead and see what traffic situation is about to happen and be prepared to steer away from it. Watch out for the caps about to come off the tractor trailers too. Heard they can be painful. Dress for the ride and not for the beach and always wear a helmet. Good luck with your decision.

I can tell you this, our stats for the Air Force just came out, and the number of deaths in Florida for riders that took and passed the MSF course are ZERO!!!! If you ride safely, pay attention to the idiots around you, and do not get in a hurry or ride mad you will be good to go.

Obviously there are alot of risks on a motorbike, not so much because of the way you ride but more because it is harder for road users in cars to see you. You should always keep your headlight on although they will have told you that in your test. I have my full license so I know what car drivers can be like. Ignorant! It's not alwayas their fault though. I knew three people who were killed in motorbike crashes and only one was because of his fast driving. It is a dangerous thing but then there are millions of people throughout the world who will never have an accident. Just be very aware of the people who aren't aware of you!

I just had one of my friends take a course and got in to an accident during that!! She will survive but did break both of her arms and now says she thinks it's just not worth it!! I
There are many things in this world that can kill us, some are just more obvious than others!!
Take your wife for a ride and show her how good of a rider you are and reassure her that you are careful and safe!! She may feel differently once you show her you can be safe on it!

The question you have to ask yourself is - do you love it enough to disregard the danger?
If not, don't do it. If you do, make sure you have a good life insurance policy so the wife and any kiddies will be taken care of.
Then get on your bike and ride!
