These would be the 2006 "mid-term" elections. All the House seats are up for re-election, as well as a third of the Senate, plus some gubernatorial seats.

The GOP has had control over both the White House and both houses of Congress for a few years now. Popular opinion on Bush, and by extention, the Republican party as a whole is very low due to perception of the war in Iraq being handled poorly and various scandals over intelligence handling.

As Bush has justified some of his actions over the past 2 years based on the premise that his slim margin of victory in the 2004 presidential election gave him a "mandate" (i.e., the will of the people was in favor of letting him do what he wants), a Democratic victory would strike a blow to that premise.

The Democrats have a lot of ground to make up in both houses to win a majority, however. The most likely scenario right now seems to be that the Dems will win some seats in both houses, but they will retain slimmer Republican majorities.

For me, the coming election is about demanding that politicians start doing their jobs properly. Neither Republicans or Democrats have managed that in my lifetime, so I think we should quit worrying about parties and start looking at performance. The current Congress is a failure, so let's vote out every incumbent who's seeking re-election. If the next Congress fails to make any progress, then throw them out in 2008, and keep throwing them out until we get a group of representatives that are more interested in the welfare of the nation than their own career.

Republicans are worried about the election, because polls show a lot of dissatisfaction with Congress these days, and we're likely to lose control of Congress. Democrats are worried, because they've been losing for years due to their lack of good ideas, and they still don't have any good ideas.
