Well $5 a card is pretty good if they are selling Bird of Paradise, not so great if it's any rare from Homelands that isn't named Baron Sengir. Without more information it's really hard to know what you want. However there are a number of place I've got good deals in the past.

Try looking for a hobby shop in your local area. They may sell singles. Usually any place that advertises D&D or other card and fantasy games. Even if the store doesn't sell them, perhaps some players inside will.

Instead of an answer I have a question for you... If they are rare and cheap, does that mean that Magic is a dying interest or are the card just not that good?

Ok i know of 2 sites:www.anycraze.com and www.mtgmintcard.com. Both are fair on their prices and they can deliver within a few days of ordering. Also you can try local card and comic shops to see what they might be selling.
