How rich? How quick? What do you have to work with?

J. P. Getty said the first billion is always the hardest. Some hobo is rumored to have said, "I'd give a thousand dollars to be one of those millionaires"--except he didn't have a thousand dollars.

If you are very good at spotting trends, commodities or stock options can be a splendid source of quick profits--if you are very good at it. For instance, if things stay fairly calm, the uncertainty pressures that drove oil up over $70 a barrel could cause it to drop, some say to the $50 a barrel range. A crude oil contract is for 1,000 barrels, a $1 price change, therefore is $1,000 made or lost. With a $20 change, properly estimated, you have upwards of $20k--more depending on how you leverage it. When you have an increased value in the contracts, you can use that to buy more contracts. If you are right, it could be a killing (if you are wrong, it is the financial equivalent of murder). Don't like commodities? Then there are options. The big oil companies' stocks are traded, and they usually trade options to buy the stocks, sort of like the futures in commodities. By a certain date you have the right to buy (call) or sell (put) a block (100 shares), for a holding price. Since we have an estimate that the value of oil will be going down (for the moment), you can short-sell the stock directly or by using options. With a falling stock price (because the value of their inventories is being deflated), the value of the options to buy will deflate too. You can sell a call and buy it back to cover what you sold when it is cheaper, or you can buy a put and sell it when it grows in value. Each of these things are called leverage, where a little money moves a lot of money. If you are right, you get rich. If you are wrong, well, you had better be rich before you get too far out on that limb. This is called speculation, not investment, by the way..

As for luck, buy a lottery ticket.

think of something everyone needs, put an advert in the paper for it charging £1 or post it on eBay. sell 1,000,000 of them plus costs and leg it to Brazil.

No one will pursue you for £1 and you'll be a millionaire living in the sun.
