I far have preferred working in an office in high tech legal communications. It is professional, 'even', I am trusted, have been doing this a long time. I found that working retail was much harder in that you never know what someone is looking for, often a simple item, often an argument or a 'deal'..... my expertise has lead to a great reputation and I have been fortunate enough to have this vocation. You have a very valid point when you say that retail would be less preferable, as the distance, I must admit on the phone, offers a certain propriety and in person, people can tend to forget the reality of this. Love your question and I absoloutely agree.

Office, definitely. I worked retail for 12 years, and have been in an office-type environment for the past 11 or so.
People (in general) are not nice. They lie, they steal, they want something for nothing, they rarely put anything back where they found it, etc. I didn't enjoy working retail (and I worked for everything from a truck stop to a nice mid-range department store to a couple of boutiques). Also, retail means (usually) working weekends, evenings, and many holidays...office work often guarantees those things as non-working (or rare occurences).
I'm not lazy, but I prefer sitting (or being able to sit) to standing for 8 hrs and watching my spider veins spread...
I'm not a people-person and definitely got tired of being chewed a new butt for things outside of my control...generally in an office (unless you're working with customers) if someone chews on ya, you can chew back and not have to sit and take it with a smile on your face...
However...if times got tough and I had to go back to retail for whatever reason, I could and would do it...bills gotta be paid and all that...but I don't miss it one bit...not even with the employee discounts...

I enjoy my home office. I contact awesome people every day and there is no cap on my salary. I do the same thing office people do but I get paid in direct proportion to my efforts, and as a result get to be a customer at the retail stores.

I have worked in both, but I would say an office.
I currently work in the charity sector and find the role more rewarding than when I was at tesco.
So Office
