No. It might feel broken, but it's not really. If it still hurts after a day, get it checked...that could mean it's broken. But it doesn't break every time it's stubbed.

After suffering 2 fractured ankles I can back the John Q up and say that you know when you break a bone, it just doesnt feel right, for about 10 seconds when you stub a toe the pain is comparable but then it eases and with a fracture it doesn't. Not until you get the lovely drugs anyway.

No that is not true. The toe can break, but a bone or soft tissue contusion can be just as painful. An x-ray is the only way to tell for sure. As a doctor, it is true we often just tape the toe. However, there are other things we can do like prescribe anti-inflammatories and take care of the traumatic arthrits that can occur from a break in the toe.

No, it doesn't break, the reason it hurts so much is because there are a LOT of nerve endings in your toes. That's why stubbing a toe is so painful.

Now you've got me thinking. As a teenager my big toe used to ache a lot. Not sure if it was from stubbing it. Anyway it's really crooked now and a doctor told me it had been broken several times. I was quite shocked, assuming I'd know if it was broken, but maybe not.........? Hmmm food for thought!

Hi no you dont fracture or brack your toe when you stub it,your metartarsals are very strong little bones. When you stub your toe you badly bruise the tissues inside thats why it feels so uncomfortable and painful.

No... It is true however that most people will break bones in their toes from time to time and never know that they did because the bones heal on their own for minor breaks...

Absolutely not! But it does hurt a lot.
Trust me on this; when people break bones, they almost always know it.
