a bar is simply a certain length of music. also known as a "measure". The Length of the bar is determined by the TIME SIGNATURE. 99% of rap, at least the stuff i've heard is in 4/4 time. this simply means that there are 4 beats per measure and the quarter note gets the beat. but you don't really need to know what that means until you get into the OTHER time signatures, which in rap will be never.

listen to the beat. you should be able to feel the "pulse" of the music. when the bass drum hits, that's the ONE, the snare is the TWO, then the next Bass Drum is THREE, the next snare is FOUR. then the bar starts over again. listen to how stuff repeats, like the samples, keyboards & such. usually this will help to find the "ONE". try to find the simplest song and count thru it. then repeat one hundred million times. after a while it'll be easy.

I hope this helps!!!

Thank you. You've touched on a lot of I was going to say. I'm going to take it a bit further and talk about the way black people are portrayed. BET should change it's name to Black Exploiting Television. It sickens me to think of what it has become. The "reality" shows that just play into the black stereotypes, the ONE music countdown show that only includes the crappy artists of today and the ghetto movies that they play. I remember what BET used to be like. Strong. It changed right around 2002. I don't listen to the radio as much as I used to. There is nothing but foul, "rump shaking" music on most of the stations. Hip hop artists are misrepresenting us. Nicki Minaj sickens me. Young Money on a whole sickens me. Lil Wayne is MUCH smarter than people think he is. He's a sellout. He knows how to make money. That's the only reason he is so foul. He doesn't care about his values. He only cares about the money and that's why I don't respect him. Souljah Boy boasts about getting F's and wanting D's. I just want to strangle him. So many young brothas aren't doing their work in school because they want to be like Souljah Boy and all the rest of the bad influences and know that they don't have to work hard to get money. Current artist, not only disrespect each other, they are disrespecting music! I'm so passionate about music and I can tell whether an "aritst" cares about their work or if they just want to be famous. The values of today's youth especially black youth are so messed up. It makes me cry when I hear young men say they want to grow up to be rappers and make "real" money. Young ladies want to grow up and be in the videos not as dancers but rump shakers. I stick with the Neo Soul, R&B and oldies stations because I can't listen to what our culture has become. I'm ashamed of what we are becoming. I can't run away from it. It's apart of who I am.
