The most important aspect in starting a new business is having the capital to sustain yourself for what ever time frame you think you will need to generate a profit. It is also important to have a solid business plan so you know where it is you are going and not just shoot from the hip.

Already some have answered capitol, an idea and motivation. All very good answers but I believe a good business plan can lead to capitol, form and refine your idea and set a road map to success that can be very motivational. Seek on line info, books at the library, or assistance from your local Small Business Administration on writing a good business plan. A bank will want to see it for a loan! Yeah, I gotta go with business plan.

If its a service, which i would recommend more than a product, the most important element is a customer...well, a lot of them. Figure out how to find them, and everything else will come together. good luck

There is no such thing. A business is a complicated undertaking that requires a combination of technical skills, people skills, capital, and sheer luck.

Just like the other answers here...MONEY is most important.
As a rule of thumb, it costs you twice and much and takes you twice as long as you think it will to get a new business started.

Motivation !
Followed by money, commitment, people skills, patience, and a willingness to accept that your ideas are not always the best ideas and that you may need to change to stay in business.

Enough working capital (cash or a secure line of credit) to get started and established.
It also doesn't hurt to know how to spell/type/proofread.

The best answer is "customers". If you know how to drive sales, then everything else is easy.
