The WRX is the version of the Subaru Impreza that that Subaru actually uses in international rally races (like the World Rally Competition).
One thing that everyone likes about the WRX is that there are only a few things that are different between the car that is used by Subaru in races and one you can buy from a dealer. The differences are pretty much things like the roll-cage (for if the car rolls over during a race), the shield under the car (most rallies are on dirt/gravel roads and can be pretty damaging to the underside of the car), and the tires they use are specifically designed for rally races and are extremely expensive.
All subarus are four wheel drive (meaning that the engine powers all four wheels at the same time which gives extra control on tough road conditions), and most of the new ones (if not all) have what they call a 'boxer' engine. Its called a boxer because the main pistons 'punch' horizontally out from the engine (instead of the moving up and down like most cars). This configuration, subaru claims, lowers the centre of gravity of the engine (and thus of the car) increasing handling while driving.
Subarus are really nice cars, and can be really safe and fun to drive. All that and they look really pretty.
Low-end Impreza sedans start at something like $24 000
but for the 'rally model' (the fun one - the WRX STI Sedan) you're looking at $33 000

Yes, those are very fast cars. They have the same power as porches. Just go to the auto section on yahoo and they have the lists of new and used cars. And the prices for the new ones are always below invoice. The name of the car is an impreza and WRX are the fastest and more expensive of those models. I put the link, but just go to autos on yahoo and look under Subaru Impreza. Prices vary with model and options.

WRX is Subaru's rally styling deparment, any Subaru with WRX after its model name will have had some form of modification over the base model to make them handle better and go faster - nice cars though!

Yes, the Subaru Impreza WRX is a very very nice car. They are quick, good handleing, and fun to drive, while still being a four door "family car". New they start at about $23,000 and go up to about $36,000. Used they vary in price based on mileage and condition. Check out http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/default.aspx?make=Subaru&model=Impreza#used
and read about the safety, space, gas mileage, other things important to you and also the Subaru website.
And in reference to another poster, Subarus are all wheel drive (AWD), not four wheel drive.

The impreza wrx is a sweet car, but what you want him to get is a 2005 legacy 2.5gt ltd. More power than a wrx, not quite as strong as the sti but its more livable. Love the new Legacy. Can be found used under 20k

Yea a rex is a top car for the price, here in NZ you can get one from around $12,000.
If you look after them they will go for 350,000km before you need to take the head off it, but beware that if you buy second hand it is almost guaranteed to have been beaten down on.

Don Dada is right. The one to covet is the WRX STi. Get his this and he may not leave YOU, but he will leave Porsches at the red light.
