PROVIDER: Talk with friends to see how their signal strength is in the areas you are in most. Cingular and Verizon generally have the best coverage and reception with Verizon being the best. Verizon also has better customer service. T-Mobile's service is not very good at all.
PHONE: If you want to mostly talk with a little bit of texting, then a RAZR or SLVR would do well. They are great for voice calls, sturdy, and small. If you do a lot of texting, get something with a keyboard like a Blackberry or Motorola Q.
PLAN: Verizon is usally more expensive than the others, but you get what you pay for. Cingular is pretty reasonable. T-Mobile is cheap, but their service quality stinks. Verizon lets you call other Verizon people for free, so if all your friends have Verizon that might be the way to go.

All of them are more or less the same if you live in India that is.i don't like any of them . we don't have a choice since we cannot live without cell phones.
it is a love hate relation with these providers. Their roaming service is not up to the standard, every time i travel there is bound to be some sort of a problem with activation and the way they bill is a little weird slashing the balance for hello tunes and other promotions when i haven't asked for the service at all.

Truthfully they all suck... The best carrier depends on where you live and work... and that changes from time to time... If cell phone signals were TV signals... you would never see a complete half hour show... Thank God they aren't... as far as I'm concerned cellular service is still in it's experimental and infancy stage... They should never be allowed to charge what they do for the flaky services they provide...

If you look for style and functions and is ready to pay any amt-NOKIA .If you look for the functions and ready to sacrifice the style get SONY ERICSON .SAMSUNG ,L.G ,MOTOROLA etc are cheaper but may not be up to the mark .
Regarding service providers
BSNL has got good coverage but the lines are often busy and the service is also poor .
Reliance comes next to BSNL in coverage but is profitable only if you own their company made set .
Hutch ,airtel ,idea etc are good service providers with good customer service and offers in my area .
However take only prepaid connections .All the postpaid connections are a sort of cheating.I say this from my experience .
