Saddam thought Iran was weak and vulnerable because of the disruption caused by the Iranian Revolution of 1979. He knew the US wouldn't help Iran at that time and he thought he could weaken them or even conquer them. The US of course wasn't going to let him win since it was in the US's interest to keep them fighting each other as long as possible. After 8 years they had exhausted them selves and it was a draw.

Saddam was, contrary to popular belief, American-approved to fight Iran. The Pro-Yank junta in power had been kicked out by Radical Islamists, Bush gave Saddam the arms and the money to fight the Iranians, and voila!

it was over the drawing of the border, and nobody really won, but they sighned a peace deal and Iran gave up the territory it took from Iraq.

cause the west was not happy with iranian revelotion, so they decided to destroy the new government and they supported iraq to attack iran
