If you have a product, It's a way to get your product out to others fast. Could you imagine having TONS of people selling your product which helps you brand your name fast.
If you are the affiliate its a way to sell products without going through the creation process. Affiliate marketing is great and here's a link below that discuss both sides in detail.

I prefer selling my own digital products, rather than being an affiliate.
A membership site like rich-jerks.com provides oodles of information products monthly, affiliate training and a private members forum to help members succeed in affiliate marketing, online marketing and internet commerce.

It's simple, really. If you get in early enough and sign up a few energetic people, you can earn income for life without doing anything. If you don't, it sucks. Needless to say, people who do get in early enough are often friends and family of the company's founder(s).
