I got rid of Norton and downloaded a free Windows one that found 21 more viruses than Norton and actually got rid of some. Is anyone else's Norton or similar like this? Why would somehting you pay so muct for not be any good?

the thing is with norton is apart from being hyped to hell,it has around 10+ different versions of the norton anti-virus 2006 edition
there are corporate, bussiness, home, server, ect, and many more so each one is slightly different but use similar defenitions
on the whole norton anti-virus is not worth using, its slow and in a test failed to find 11 viruses that a free program"avast 4.7" found
the free alternatives are much better for home machines and the money you save can go towards some ram or a nice new graphic card
happy days

I don't use any anti virus software at all and I've had a virus once in the 6-7 years of owning my own PC. It infected .exe files, so I didn't lose any work, just programs that I was saving on hard drive. I saved my work to disk, wiped my hard drive, reinstalled Windows, put my work back on my PC and everything was fine. My only loss was I had to spend time downloading all those programs again.

I continue to not use anti virus software because whenever I have installed Norton it has severely slowed my PC down. It is always one step behind the latest viruses (logically) so is really more trouble than it's worth. I certainly wouldn't pay money for it and I might sound a little paranoid here but I'm almost certain that installing anti-virus software actually gives you more viruses...

I find it saves time, money and effort to have a storage solution such as a second hard drive or large removable storage device so you can periodically back up your files and make a fresh install of Windows. That keeps the viruses away and your PC running fast.

Most people don't know this, but near enough every Anti-Virus program is designed with it's own viruses! (Either to be made and deleted straight away or just show up as viruses that aren't really there!) This way everytime you install a new Anti-Virus program, it'll suddenly find more viruses that your last one never picked up! Just a little tip, i've never had any probs with Norton, just other people using my pc and turning it off coz it's slowing them down with what they're doing!

That is exactly why I got PcTools instead of Norton. I gave up on Norton. They suck. Same goes for McAffee. They dont stay on top of viruses or spyware. I haven't had a problem since I got PcTools products. They have a good shredder too.

I have heard this story so many times about norton, it's a complete waste of time. for many reasons I use an a/v called NOD32 from www.eset.com it's not free but costs way less than what norton does and does a much better job,

Frankly, Norton is a piece of crap. You are only paying for a name, and nothing else. I use AVG Free edition and it works better than Norton (and it's not nearly as cumbersome too).

The brand sells it. People buy it for the name and not the product but as people become aware that the software isn't as good as it should be I think Symantic will have a problem but we will have to see.
