Just to make sure we are all talking about the same thing (b/c I think I shouldn't have called them anchor roots), will it grow secondary roots along the vine itself, and if not, is there a way to protect it from the wind blowing it around? can the tendrils be useful for this and how?

no.. watermelons have no anchor roots. they are sorta a delicate vine, although i do move my vines around to grow in a certain direction, i have to be careful not to damage the vine when i do this.. the roots are strong but do grow right on the surface of the dirt they do however grow a piece of plant that stretches out in a spiral pattern to grab onto things.

No, watermelon vines have a very small root system and pull right out of the ground easily.

ive grown watermelons for 10 years and never noticed that. Other melons will throw runners like that however.
