English pottery always used to be earthenware. This is the stuff you get from the local pottery. It's made with a heavy clay and is quite strong.
In China, they had porcelain which is a type of ceramic more closely related to glass than earthenware. It's lightweight and translucent. It was extremely popular in Europe but very expensive so English potters tried to come up with a cheaper homebrew product. Their best effort was a lightweight pottery they called china after the country that Porcelain comes from.

When I was a child, I was told that these things were invented in China but I don't know if this is true or not. One thing I know is that Europe imported a lot of china from China in the olden days. You will find evidence of this in major European museums.

This wa because the way in which the pottery or "china" was made, was first discovered surprisingly enough in China, by I believe Marco Polo who brought some back whilst on his travels across the Silk Road.

I purely use a mug. it is all we've in the living house (aside from the little coffee cups and saucers we've been given as quickly as we married and have used approximately thrice!!). i admire the assumption of a cup and saucer although; this is subtle, yet regrettably it is a few thing i'm no longer......
