Franklin Delano Roosevelt served as President of the U.S. for a little over three terms: 1933-1937, 1937-1941, and 1941-1945. He was elected to serve from 1945-1949, but passed away in 1945. It was not long after that Congress passed a new law limiting the President to no more than two elected terms in office. So technically, Gerald R. Ford, who took over for Richard M. Nixon when he resigned, could have served for a total of ten years had he been re-elected -- he lost the 1976 election to Jimmy Carter.
