The answers above are basically correct, but I would like to state that these are *NOT* there for blind or visually-impaired people! I mean, think about it -- how would a blind person read the answer on a calculator after putting in the numbers and calculations?

Back in the day when they taught touch-typing and bookkeeping (oh, so long ago -- LOL!!), we were expected to be able to type and enter numbers without knowing *ANY* of the keys by sight once we hit the center spot or the home position (F/J) on the keyboard. We had blank keyboards with just the two bumps, or blank pad with just the center 5 bump! And away you would practice -- and heaven forbid if you made a mistake!!

Passing grade for touch typing was 60 words a minute, 2 errors. Try it some time -- and no fair peeking!!

So that people can just feel for that key and know that "hey this is the 5" ... It's just so people can type without looking at the keys. As is the "F" and the "J" on the keyboard.

It's to aid in locating the centre key without looking at it or for visually impaired people. The same applies to the F & J keys on a computer keyboard.

There is nothing like that on the 5 key on my laptop. there is however a raised dot on the J key. . . something to do with homerow keys I think.
