I think it depends on the type of gas fire. However, in the UK a gas fire should only be fitted by a Corgi Registered fitter in accordance with current Regulations so you really should get an expert in.

This is not a big enough gap for a gas fire. Check on the size and open up the wall enough to install any size you want.

check with your local gas inspector by a phone call, gap between gas fired units and combustibles in my area is 2 inches providing you allow enough supply air without any restrictions
