I think it depends on the type of gas fire. However, in the UK a gas fire should only be fitted by a Corgi Registered fitter in accordance with current Regulations so you really should get an expert in.

This is not a big enough gap for a gas fire. Check on the size and open up the wall enough to install any size you want.

check with your local gas inspector by a phone call, gap between gas fired units and combustibles in my area is 2 inches providing you allow enough supply air without any restrictions

If you need to ask this sort of question, you are not qualified to fit it, and, as such, could cause an explosion. Get a qualified CORGI insaller o fit it.
