all jokes aside, the intention of the question can and should have been answered. A gallon of water, represents how many inches per square foot? Sot that If a crop calls for an inch of rain per week and you have a 100 sq. ft.of garden and are watering with a gallon bucket, how many gallons does that plot need, per week? Any of you math whizzes that wiz on a question able to give a formula? If not, why must you waste your wits with worthless jokes about a legitimate question? Grow up or get out.

An inch of rain is a measure over any area. For example, an inch of rain in a rain gauge is a very small amount of water. It is a decent amount of rain, but very little amount of water. If you made a huge container 100 ft. square, and rain filled it to an inch, it is still the same amount of rain, just more water you collected. In order to get more water out of an inch, you had to increase the area of water for more rain to fill it. An inch of rain is just an inch, no matter what area it takes up. It is not a volume measurement, just an imaginary measurement.

The gallon is a measure of volume and the inch is a measure of length. In order to convert from inches to gallons, you need the surface area. The equation you can use is as follows:

(inches of rain/12 in/ft)*(surface area (measured in square feet))* (7.48 gal/ft^3) = gallons of water.

7.48 is the conversion factor between gallons and square feet.
