It is my understanding that ethanol gas is only for vehicles that are compatible for it. It is not intended for you mower. You need to buy just regular unleaded gasoline without the ethanol for your mower. And what are you talking about "starting fluid" I really hope you are not talking about lighter fuel for grilling, because that could be really dangerous and could cause your mower to become even more damaged. Also you should try changing the oil and the spark plugs on your mower, mine was running a bit sluggish and bogging down, and that fixed the problem.

It would depend on how much ethanol is in it. I mow for a living and I do not have any problems. I buy the 89 octane with ethonal in Iowa. I am so used to buying it for the car that I don't think to get regular gas for the mowers. It sounds to me like you have a carb problem. The orfices are quite small in a mower carb. It could be out of adjustment too. If it is a carb with a float, you may need to take the bowl off. It will accumulate a rust in there. As I said the holes are tiny and the spray carb cleaner does not always work even using compressed air. I use a shipping tag wire and push that through the hole. I repaired a new mower for a neighbor he had bought it at Wal-Mart at seasons end. That had a plastic carb, it was cracked. I am sure you have already done this but yu may need to check your plug also. I bought a plug cleaner from harbor Frieght. It has saved me a lot of money in buying plugs. I don't use it for me cars or trucks but for fouled lawnmower plugs it works great. If your mowers are two cycle in depends on the oil you buy to mix with the gas. I buy a good synthetic, like Stihl. I have one stihl weedeater that is over 6 years old and I have never had to replace a plug. If I let someone borrow it I give them the oil I have mixed up.

Sounds like dirty gas or gas contaminated with water.

Would suggest that you remove and completely clean and flush the gas tank. Some grades of gasoline do not have the ethanol and I would recommend that you choose one of those brands/grades for your mower. Also get yourself a plastic gas can as metal ones sweat and can cause water in the gas.

Filter the gas through a coffee filter to keep it clean too! Mister coffee or just a real cheap coffee filter that you can throw away.

I have used ethanol successfully for some time. There has been a lot of rain here lately. Are you sure the place you are getting your gas from doesn't have a leak and water is getting in?

To the bit about starting fluid....... starting fluid is starting fluid...... cold either under that name or ether..... (btw lighter fluid will start a engine as well, lmao)

It does sound like water, or (if you havn't changed the plug/s in a while) the plug.
