We are fortunate that we only share land borders two other countries: Mexico and Canada. Parts of Alaska are close to the Soviet Union.
Looking back through our history: Look up Fort Necessity during the French and Indian War to see how we defended ourselves from French forces coming down from Canada.
Look up the USS Constitution to see what a sailing warship looked like. We defended ourselves from sea attack from the start of our nation.
Look up Fort Funston to see WWII 16-inch gun shore defense.
Look up NIKE missile to see what missile defense looked like.
Look up Trident submarine to see what our nuclear submarine fleet looks like as a deterrent to attack.
In today's world we have a policy of fighting overseas to prevent attacks within our borders. We have aircraft carriers like the USS Nimitz that take aircraft around the world.
We also have vehicles like the Bradley fighting vehicle and the Hummer that are used in ground actions like Operation Iraqi Freedom.
