Well the US has never had a female president either, or a non-white president. Hell, they were tripping on John F. Kennedy because he was Catholic. He was the first Catholic president. So we are not perfect. Japan, like most cultures is a traditional patriarchy. Yes it is terribly sexist. I live in Hawaii which has a huge Asian cultural influence and it is hard for me sometimes because I am so not a traditional woman. The United States is still sexist but not to the extent of other countries. I should know, I had my eyes opened when I visited other countries. This country also has puritan roots which shield women in this country from things like the Royal British Air Force painting naked ladies on their planes... in 1991! I was appalled. I can't help it I was raised in a fundamentalist Christian household and those values stuck. It also strikes a feminist nerve. It's disrespectful of women in my opinion. That would never happen here. The Christians would have a fit. It's a strange mix in this country of conservativism, paranoia over liablity and litigation involving sexual harrassment suits (money talks) and the aftermath of our civil rights movement, including feminism. Oh yes and let's not forget how World War II required women to enter the work force. And once they were out of the gate there was no turning them around. Yeah, we liked that economic freedom. Other countries haven't experienced that. All I know is that I am so glad I was born here as a woman. In traditonal cultures the value of the women is as a wife and mother but not much else. It used to be that if a woman lost her husband due to death, divorce or abandonment she was screwed and so were their children. Its still hard but not like it used to be. In some traditional cultures that hasn't changed. In traditional cultures a woman is valued by how well she takes care of her family. In the United States it is more about earning power, achieving the American dream and rugged individualism. The roles of wife and mother are not as valued. We have a different set of values. I wish the role of wife and mother were more revered in our culture but otherwise I just want some r-e-s-p-e-c-t.

You can't expect western liberalism to just be shoved down the throats of other cultures. It takes years for changes like that to take place. Young women today take it for granted but don't realize it was not all that long ago women in America did not have all the freedom they have today. Don't be surprised if it doesn't happen for another 200 years. Besides America is not a perfect society that it should set example for other countries. We have our problems and some are very serious. Fix your own house first!

Well, it's tradition. You cannot just disregard their centuries-old tradition. And don't pretend it's just Japan. There are still SOO many countries in the world where women are just "heir-producers." Even in modern countries, yes, we have come a long, long way, but you cannot deny that men and women are still seldom looked upon completely equally.

You are trying to apply western standards and views on an eastern nation and peoples.

Why not leave them alone and let them enjoy their heritage and birth of the royal prince.

Or should everyone change in order to be more like you?

I'm against sexism, but have you considered that in America, we let anyone who gets elected to be president and there hasn't even been one female president at all in the U.S. so considering that, women might just not be cut out to be president. & they have had thousands of years of tradition. sexism is when you think that the opposite sex is inferior to you just because of that. so I dont agree with you.

Um, wait a minute, I think you're completely overlooking America. Japan is still very traditional. Sexism is thriving in the modern U.S., and you're attacking Japan?
