The Third Man (1949, Carol Reed, director) is considered one of the twenty best films of all time and one of the best thrillers. It is my favorite film and stars Alida Valli, Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten in a bombed out Vienna, post-World War II. The scenery is exquisite, cinematography great, acting tops and the story good. The music by Anton Karas on a traditional Austrian zither won the Academy Award that year and is famous as The Harry Lime Theme.

If you like Donnie Darko type movies you will love Brick.
Not sure how it went down in the U.S. but was only on limited release here in the U.K.
Trust me on this one.

Lady Snowblood - Blizzard from the Netherworld (parts i & ii) Directed by Toshiya Fujita - Tarantino borrowed from it for Kill Bill. Likewise Korean director Chan-wook Park's films Old Boy and Sympathy for Mr Vengeance are brilliant, but utterly dark - you'll find no feel good factor here

Bluebird is a movie of a 13 years old girl who's facing so many trouble in school and in her family. Everybody in the school just hates that little girl. She meets a black guy in the train who gives him a book and Calls her "Bluebird". She' takeing care of her 5-6 years old handicapped brother and she prooves herself a good athlet in the end.
It's so cinematic, not so hollywood.

The French film Irreversible with Monica Belucci. It was very controversial when it came out as it has a 9 minute, very violent rape scene. It is told in reverse (like Momento) and is very powerful.

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslett. It's one of my favorite movies but I never really heard anyone rave about it.
