So I've been working as a "Finance Manager" at a local tech college. I'm making $35,000 with my MBA. (I live in Utah...the pay here is lame). My work duties include everything from writing grants to request funding for school projects to purchasing textbooks for instructors. The work I'm doing right now could be done by a high-school graduate...My boss, the campus president, has hopes of having me become the vice-president of the college.
Just yesterday I was offered (totally out of the blue) a position with a bank. They want a Controller who, within the next few years, WILL become the CFO of this billion-dollar bank. I hadn't even applied with this bank...they got wind of my credentials from a colleague. They are offering me $50,000 a year…the benefits are about the same and I would be doing a lot more MBA-geared work.

The problem is, I really enjoy my current boss. Although my current job duties are not what I had thought they would be post-college, my boss is super-nice and really cares about my future.
Add on to all this the fact that I’ve been at my current position for only three months…And that I signed a contract of employment…I know I’m not legally obligated to maintain my employment…it’s just a major fo-pah to leave in the middle of a contract.
Is it worth the extra $15,000 to leave…? I know my friendship with my current boss wouldn’t be totally ruined…but it would be tarnished.

I would weigh my options. I'd put the pros and cons on paper and really pray and think on it. If your current boss is truly your friend then he will still be your friend if you take the other job, and he would be happy for you advancing yourself. Another thought is you can sit there in your current job and wait on hopes and possibilities that may NEVER come. Also, consider where each job will take you financially in the years to come. Good luck on your decision.

It looks as if you are making a decision with everybody but yourself in mind. You need to first take what YOU think into consideration. First off, do you really think you would LOVE the new job with all of the other apects of it. This being, the work environment, the stress levels...the people...etc.
Weigh that with the financial differences. YOUR current boss will totally understand if you choose to switch based on the fact that before you decide, YOU will have looked at all the options and for the benefit of your career. Good Luck.

It sounds like you have options in both occupations, with advancement as a promise. Is there a way to talk to your current boss about the lack of challenge in your job? And the lack of money you are making for your skills? Sometimes asking when the advancement is coming, actually speeds it along. I would go with the job you love over money any day. I myself work a job I love, and don't make much at it, but I'll be perfectly honest, the things I go without, are nothing compared to going home happy every day. Good Luck. :) Talk to both employers and see if their offers are set in stone, and if you'll be happy in either place in ten years time.

What does the vice-president of the college make and what are the benefits? How does the "big picture" look on that? How do you visualize yourself down the road in that picture? Are you smiling?
"Use your gifts and let your light shine!"
I say stick with the job you have and become the best dern vice-president that school has ever seen.

if it was totally out of the blue then God must be telling you something. Always go with your heart,,,, If you Like your present job,, GREAT but you say you will Love the other, make sure however if you leave your present job. Ask them if you will be able to return at a later date incase it doesn't work out. But usually out of the Blue should you say,,,, is the Lord and he knows everything. Good luck with your decsion.

look at it this way..
just exactly what would you lose by applying for the new job?......exactly , NOTHING.
just go ahead and apply for the job.....at the very least you will find out much more at the interview and will be better informed to make a better judgment..
And if after the interview the job is not offered to you?...
Well then you 'll know for sure It was never yours in the first place...GO FOR IT! and Good luck.
God Bless you.

Life is too short to worry about hurting someone's feelings. if you think the new job is a good career move and if you think you will love it, then do it. if you spend too long worrying about what other people think, life will quickly pass you by.
