Obviously the actual moving expense, but what else is appropriate? Assistance in buying a house? House rental untill a house can be bought? Compensation for a spouse having to leave a job? What else should we try to get negotiated before we actually agree to go?

I just did this. At a minimum you should get them to pay for the packing and moving of your household goods. Additionally they may move a vehicle so you don't have to drive it. Secondly you want to get cash for incidentals... there will be many; like deposits on utilities, first and last months rent (if you rent), etc. Thirdly, if you can get it, and you own a home, see if they will give you a contract that says if your house does not sell within a pre-determined amount of time, that they will buy it for a pre-negotiated price. With the housing market as soft as it is now, this can be worth quite a bit of money in mortgage payments. I did not get this and my house has been on the marget for over 120 days and it is costing me a fortune making 2 mortgage payments. Good luck and congratulations!

Ask for all of those things and whatever else you can come up with and then be prepared to negotiate down to exactly what you need.

Make a Wish List. Start out with everything and anything you can think of. Then start checking off what you can do without and what you absolutely have to have. Then negotiate with your employer.'

My husband's company paid for the following:
moving expenses, real estate agent (for both places),
utilities installation fees, cars registration, apartment
rental to go house hunting. No compensation for the
spouse leaving job.

moving expenses, temporary housing, two or three preliminary trips for house hunting and general exploration.

Selling expenses for your current house, an adjustment if the new location has higher taxes...

and anything else you may feel you need to facilitate the move...
