Resistence, Rebellion, and Death by Camus
The Ghandi Reader
Civilization and its Discontents by Freud
Essays by Montaigne
Those are all good intro/intermediate level books, both interesting and artful.

Also I would suggest reading some Nietzsche; even though he is difficult to understand at first his writing is incredible and enjoyable long before you actually understand what he's saying. If you do that, maybe start with On the Genealogy of Morals (Kaufmann translation).

why not sophie's world or books like that? you want things in capsule?

Yes i did not read sophie's world. But I have a feeling those type books will help more.

Any way if you are getting information through books means it is second hand. it is pretty difficult to get out of that.. or develop from there. or correct from there.
But the capsule type books are give more it second hand.. if you read somethign natural you can make it more first hand experiences..

Hey solo,

I assume you have read plato and the basics of Philosophy 101.

So, "Zen, and the art of Motor cycle maintenance". This book talks about philosophy using Motor cycle maintenance, when the main character had gone crazy studying philosophy without an example. The attached web site has the book online.

What kind of philosophy?
Ethics: In addition to Dalai Lama's "Ethics for a New Millenium", I'll add, "Elements of Moral Philosophy" by James Rachels; "Ethics without Ontology" by Hilary Putnam; "Ethics and Infinty" by Emmanuel Levinas and "Sense and Goodness without God" by Richard Carrier
Metaphysics: "Words and Life" by Hilary Putnam (well, anything by Putnam in the last 10 years), the Carrier book, the Pirsig book (also it's sequel: "Lila")
Actually, the Carrier book is a great introductory tool and has a good bibliography.
