I think the biggest thing is just be yourself. Be confident and comfortable with who you are and the rest will come together!

Just stop caring. Stop worrying about what's going to happen if you talk to somebody. Do you know how many people there are in the world? Okay, neither do I, but well into the billions, what's going to happen if some clown you meet doesn't find you attractive? Nothing? You could have 100,000 people turn you down, and that wouldn't even be 1% of the people in this world.

You have to realize that not everybody is going to like you. Do what makes you happy, and stop living in fear of what could happen if people see the real you.

They say the only thing that stops people from being successful is fear, fear of failing, fear of...whatever. Once you get over your fear, you're free to do whatever you want.

Just be you, act natural, and relax. That's what attracts most people.

As for feeling less nervous, there's a specific type of meditative breathing (water breath) that's geared toward this. Long, deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. The breathing out like an extended sigh is such a release. After a few of these breaths, I feel calmer about everything.

Pretend.
Imagine someone you know - or a movie star you like. Pretend you're just as cute/talented/fun as her. Spend some time imagining it and be disciplined about behaving that way in your daily life. You'll fail here and there - pick up and resume the pretense.

After a while - things will change for you and pretense will no longer be needed.

You wanna know what's worked a treat for me? Learning to bellydance. I'm 300+ according to my last weigh-in, but there's something about the dance form that makes you really comfortable inside your skin. And it's funny how I can just switch into "dancer mode" and all of a sudden I'm walking a little straighter and wearing that little "you know you want me" smirk on my face.
