do you think they could've saved his life, by killing the ray and having an emergency surgery?

That's what I was thinking too; it's natural reaction of shock to pull something out of u that's hurting. I think it was more of shock than anything else.

I saw on TV Dr. Michael Baden, a forensic pathologist, say that the barbs do more damage coming out then going in and that the venom isn't that poisonous. If he didn't pull it out he might not have died, but it is instinct to pull something like that out.

I think it's a natural reaction to try to pull something that's hurting you away from your body.

But anyway, if he'd have left it alone, the ray just would have delivered more & more poison to his system. Apparently the first poison was strong enough to kill him immediately. Also the barb made a hole in his heart, so the heart was leaking too.'

I wondered the same thing. The barb was blocking the hole in his heart. Plus being jagged, when he pulled it out, he probably tore the hole even bigger.

That being said, he would have needed to be in surgery VERY quickly to have any chance of surviving. Then there is also the issue of the poison being injected right into his heart.

So, the odds, would have still been VERY grim, but it might have increased a little.

I saw on the news they consulted an expert on sting rays that said had the barb not been removed, emergency surgery to remove it carefully may have saved his life.
He went on to say that any stab wound to the heart, the weapon should be left in, because once it is removed blood will fill up the space round the heart and it wont be able to beat. (the likely cause of death for Irwin)

Stingray barbs do not "inject" poison into the body. The barb itself is coated with a toxin, that causes burning itching and infection.

Probably not, stingrays are poisonous and, if Irwin had left the barb in, more poison would have gone into him.

Probably not, I heard the barb actually went into his heart, and he died very quickly.

It's something I've wondered too. They always say if you have something stuck into you, do not remove it. So you have to wonder.. :(

The link below has information about the poison.

He would have died, anyway. The poisonous barb pierced his heart.
