my brother has 3 nags, he used to have a transit, well its sitting in hhis garden...and he gave up trying to keep it on the road...even after me and the other brother spent 3 weeks giving it a stainless steel chassis... and a complete engine rebuild... he bought an iveco 7.5tonne...but unless youve got a class 2 licence, you wont be able to drive it without taking the test...i dont think the law is in yet, but its coming, ask at your police station for clarification.

older Mk2 transits are cheap..but it a huclean feat keeping tehm on the road..and you cant get some parts..like a steering box bearing... a company called diagraph at J3 of the M6 coventry hales industrial estate, specialise in horseboxes and conversions..

good luck...

Buy as new a lorry you can afford. Failing that, avoid Bedford CL's, TK's and TL's because they're pretty old and you can't get the spares. Old Renault Dodges are also a no-no for the same reason, and also because they often come without PAS (and believe me, they're heavy!). Leyland Roadrunners, Ford Ivecos, DAFs and Mans are good. If you're looking to travel large-ish horses, look for a lorry that weighs 5.5 t or more. 3.5t lorries don't have a lot of stability and tend to rock a lot. And finally, sadly, no lorry is cheap to run :(. Good luck! :)

i've got a ford cargo which is really reliable. It's 7 1/2 tonne which gives you more flexibility with weight limits etc whereas many 3 1/2 tonnes with two horses, a couple of people & several sets of tack often are border line on the weight limit. I'm based in Cheltenham & am actually thinking about selling my lorry as I want to go on to a HGV, email me if you are interested & I'll send you more details. It has just sailed through it plating (MOT equivalent) so thats fine for another 12 months. Cheers, Amanda

I would not be without my Leyland Roadrunner. We have owned it for 3 years and it always sails through the plating. We had it serviced for the first time this year and there was nothing major wrong.

It has served us well and will be a part of our family life for a long time-I may even treat it to a re-spray.
