it all depends on how many times you ran back over it with the dryer part of cleaner. and how saturated the carpets got plus the foam on the bottom (it all just depends on what kind of carpet cleaner you used but in my opion it should be mostly dry by then in some areas.most should be

I just cleaned my carpet a month ago.
1. Make sure it is not going yo rain that day.
2. Suck up as much of the extra water as you can from the carpet.
3. If you have a fan, turn it on HIGH
4. Open all the windows, and just wait
Mine took a while to dry, we started at 12:00 pm and finished at 5:00 pm, but in our defense it had not been deep cleaned in 4 years!! It was almost completely dry by 7:30 an the next day. But if your carpet is not almost black like our beige carpet was, and you don't have to go over it 10 times, it should be dry some time that same day.
Good Luck!! Its not fun!

Why don't you go out an rent a carpet shampooer and do the whole rug. The vacuum in these machines extract the water from the carpet. The main idea is not to saturate any area very much. I have a Hoover Steam Cleaner that shampoos and rinses--push forward for shampoo, back for rinse. The instructions say to do this for a MAXIMUM of 3 times. I usually do just two--two forward two back with the button pressed to make the liquid come out--then I go over the area several times with just the vacuum part to suck up the moisture. 12 hours as you suggested should work--just don't put too much liquid down. Running a fan or two (ceiling or otherwise) and your A/C helps.

I have a very large living room and own a carpet cleaner. I did half of the room before I went to bed and it was dry when we got up the next morning. The trick is to extract as much water from the carpet as possible and it will dry quicker. 12 hours as you mention should be plenty of time.

Yes my carpet is usually clean after 3 hours of letting it dry but, it might depend on what type of carpet it is and if you let the doors or windows stay open during the drying time. The type of carpet i have, dosent have scotch guard on it and it also is a very short berber type. Also if the carpet is older then the pad below it may be worn out and not absorb as much as a newer pad would.

After shampooing it go over it again with vineger and water in the shampooer and turn on fan on high. The vineger takes out excess soap which sits at top of carpet and attracts dirt really bad. My carpets are the same way I clean them and a week later they would look horrible again I did this and it worked I let it dry abt 7-8 hrs with the fan

Depends on how much water you use and the thickness of the carpet. With good ventilation, (fans or open windows) it should be dry in that time frame.

you can hang it out to dry, the water drains off effectively and the carpet wont get dirty in the process!

It will dry overnight. But it's fine to walk on it even when it's wet as long as your feet aren't dirty.
