your only option is a permanent protective coating over the steel to prevent its exposure to moisture & oxygen. Apply a reputable rust preventive paint like Rustseal sold by KBS Coatings. If you do it right the first time and use quality products, you'll never have to worry.

most often that is a problem that there is little honest resolution for.. you may deter it or retard it but not always gonna prevent it altogether. New cars have an undercoating election when you buy they charge more for it.. some people pay for it others do not... also they have an option when purchasing a vehicle new to have a clear coat done on the outer surface to help retard rust from begining... after many months of daily use and weather conditions these safe guards break down as well so unless you have a clear coat and undercoating done on your vehicle every couple of years which most wont pay to have done as it does get costly..Plus dont forget : one little dent from some one slamming thier car door into you vehicle will leave it open to rust.. so even with all the added prevention you will still most likely end up the victim of rusting..

It really depends on the type of material you are trying to protect and the environment which the item is in. But a good rule of thumb is you have to keep the air/moisture away from the metal the better you can do this the better it will work. And yes oil will work for a while until you rub it off! a big draw back in many applications. So one of the best things you can do is find a super tough coating that does not come off easy aka keeps the moisture permanently away from the metal. There are a few companies that make these types of specialize coatings one of them is kbs coatings and they have a lot of info on there site for you to read up on "how to do it".

You have to coat it in some manner or fashion before it starts to rust. Whether that is paint, oil, some clearcoat enamel or what have you. Once it starts rusting, you can't stop it from rusting or spreading, you can only slow it down. The only way you can really stop it after that is to grind it off and retreat it or to take acid to it to eat it off then retreat it.

I'm a packaging engineer and work in the auto industry. Deal with preventing rust all the time.

Depending on the steel, the formation of a black rust layer is actaully a good thing, but red rust is bad.

Primer (usually lead based) follwed by paint is the traditional method of rust prevention.

steel is not steel if it rusts, you have got inferior quality iron. the only option is to paint it with a lead based paint, use a primer before painting so that the rust doesnt come ot too soon.

KBS Coatings makes a product called RustSeal that I have used successfully to paint some metal lawn ornaments.

I just got all three of their products ... 2 prep products and the paint ... and followed the instructions. It was pretty simple and I have not had any issues with rust.
