A wireless device uses either a radio or infra-red emitter to send signals to another device. Some examples are a TV's remote control and WiFi Internet hubs for computers. No wires are used to carry the information from one device to another.

There are many ways that a signal can be impressed onto the radio or infra-red carrier, such as amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), pulse-code modulation (PCM) and coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (COFDM). These are just a few of many wireless modulation schemes in use in various products.
