Photos, you can see them as a slide show by putting them into My Documents or My Pictures and clicking on "view as slide show". If you have movie clips you can put them into Microsoft movie maker (in the accessories folder) and then copy to CD. Its a good program to start out with.
It starts to get a little more complicated when you want to save to DVD
If it is something you later get into have a look at Serif Movie Plus 8 (about 30 quid) www.serif.com. I have just started using it and it is the Bee Knees.
Good Luck

If you have Microsoft Office then Powerpoint is the application to use. However, it's a bit expensive to purchase if you don't have it.
There are more free tools than you can imagine. Open Office has an equivalent and is available for download from http://www.openoffice.org.
Free image editing software is also available. It's called Gimp and is a very powerful package. Available from http://www.gimp.org
