I have a betta in with a male and female Fanned-Tail goldfish. He has been in there for about 5 + months and he hasnt tried to attack them. The Female is now pregnant however, and he is chasing her around, but hasnt fought with her yet. I would advice if u do put a betta in with a goldfish and if u have a female, separate the betta from her, before she lays her eggs!

i agree with what mark said. in addition, male bettas can even be in the same tank if there is enough space and plants/decorations that each individual male betta can establish their own territories. this will allow them to stay in their own area and not fight. male bettas will often nip and fight with other fish that have long flowing fins that will confuse them. so a slower fancy goldfish will likely be picked on by the betta. another problem is that goldfish tend to grow much much bigger than most would think. usually up to 8-12 inches or more if given the proper conditions and withstanding premature death of improper care. once the goldfish becomes bigger than the betta, it in fact might actually consider the smaller betta to be food and eat it. and again, bettas prefer warm water and goldfish are cold water fish.

A male betta will only act aggressively towards another male betta within his space. In fact, put in with a more agressive fish like a tiger barb, a betta will be harrassed endlessly because of it's long flowing fins. A betta would be fine with a goldfish, except that bettas really do much better in a tank that's at least 75 to 80 degrees (farenheit) and goldfish are a coldwater species. Both species are however equiped with a labrynth organ which allows them to breath fresh water from the surface, so you wouldn't need an air pump for either of them.

Gold Fish are the most peacful loving fish around. It wouldn't fight ANYTHING. The Betta will try to pick on it, but will soon be no fun to learn that the Gold Fish will just swim away and not bother fighting. I had the two together before.. but also had other fish in the tank.

No, a male betta will only fight with another male betta. I have kept solitary male bettas with a large variety of tropical fish with no problem.
Tropical fish (like your betta) should be kept seperately from goldfish. The requirements for these fish are different. For starters, bettas like it warm - upwards of 80 degrees F. Goldfish do better in cold water. Another reason tropicals should not be kept with goldfish is crosscontamination/disease possibilities.
Female bettas do not fight either.

It depends on the betta, and the size of the tank. In a small tank under 5 gallons betta are more aggressive. Also goldfish are rather slow swimming, and can't out swim an aggressive betta.

I have a Betta and a goldfish in a 10 gal tank. They do OK together. They have had a couple of spats but are generally peaceful to each other. Or ignore each other.

Betas will fight with other Betas, and will destroy any other fish around them. Heck, Ive had them jump out of their tank to try to get to each other if they are too close! Best bet is to keep them seperated from the rest of your tank.

No, they just kill goldfish. I had a tank with 8 goldfish and one beta, the beta was the only one left standing.
