Can this poor girl ever be normal again, grow up, find friends and generally thrive?

Apparently she is currently feeling sympathy towards the man who kept her captive, so it's safe to say the experience messed her up.

I think the important point to remember here is that it wasn't just 8 years of her life, but possibly the most important 8 years - she was 18 when she was released, so she's missed growing up, becoming a teenager, experiencing all the normal things we experience during puberty, such as fancying boys at school and having popstar crushes.

I cannot imagine that this poor girl will ever live what we would call a 'normal' life. What happened to her is appalling and I can't see how you can put something like that behind you.

Also she's not going to get that time back. She's missed the years where she should have been growing physically and mentally mature and I don't think these are things that you can just catch up on.

No she will not. She will have a life as anyone does but will remain huanted by her experience. All the counselling in teh world will not take away 8 years of sheer terror and so many other things we will never know about. I'm afraid to say that, and no matter how well she seems to be doing, it will be with her forever.

It really beggars belief and I suspect none of us can even imagine the damage that this has done to her. She will need s a lot of help and support but the best thing the wider world can do is give her the space she needs to find what she has missed and not treat her like some exhibit that needs to be studied.

She says she is perfectly fine and what she sees as normal is very different to ours now.

But she must be hiding something a lot deeper than just being held captive...
She is the only one that can decide where her life is to go now and she has my best wishes.

I'm glad the sick bastard threw himself infront of a train and i hope he rots.

Perhaps she feels that the child is the only good thing to come from the past 8 years. By the way, the man topped himself, so he won't see any prison time (Rot in hell b****d). Who knows, perhaps it is a variant on the Stockholm syndrome.

If she gets the right psychological therapy then she may be able to live a relatively normal life but I feel the effects of her imprisonment and treatment will stay with her for life.

I think so but it is going to take a lot of gentle care and counseling. This story really scared me. I have two small kids myself.

Top marks for keeping herself alive though. And at least she'll see the turd who kept her prisoner go down for a long long time.

Good luck to her. May be she can turn it around with a book/film about her.
