I am sorry this baby was a boy - had it been a girl they would have had to change the law to allow the line of succession to continue through the Crown Prince's daughter. As it is now, the law will now change. Japan is very conservative and patriarchal. Before this baby was born a royal cousin suggested that the Crown Prince should take a concubine to try and produce a son.

Since the birth of new prince there are still people in Japan asking for change so that women in the royal household can rule. The last female to rule Japan was in the seventy century. The Japanese royal family goes back 1,500 of ruling Japan. It be tradition that the male line rules Japan. It was on in the seventies that Sweden change its laws to let Princess Victoria be the next queen of Sweden. This was done by passing law in the Swedish Parliament.

These are ancient traditions, nothing related to the women's place on society, so, for instance, in Spain, we're now trying to change our constitution text for the same reason... Because the Prince has had a baby girl... and in some other European Countries, they have changed it also during the last years...
I can be something strange nowadays, but if you read about live in your country for example during the last two centuries, you will see that most things have changed for women, the right to vote, or the right to inheritances... all those rights that we have won during the last centuries, in the Monarchy case are more difficult, because they have to change a lot of legal documents, and there're a lot of personal interests on not to change it...
PS. In Japan, women don't have to walk behind the men, that only happens in some Muslims countries...

Well, most countries have something against women ruling. Even in Sweden, the second born Carl Phillip was crown prince for 2 months before they changed the rule about 20 years ago.

According to ABC News (either Nightline or else World News with Charles Gibson), a very important part of Japan's traditions is to have a strong emperor (a male). There have been so many changes in Japan people really don't want this particular tradition to be broken.
