My ground is fairly flat in this area so I would have to divert it 50 feet which means dealing with a garden hose every time I mow. I'm thinking maybe making a water garden or something. I planted a River Birch but it's not drinking up all the water.

Why don't you create a decorative gravel bed around your AC. Make a nice semi-circle, square, or whatever pattern you would like around you AC, kill off any additional grass, put down a weed barrier and steel edge, and then lay in about 3"-4" of decorative gravel, granite, or marble chips. They have a ton of colors you can match to your house or garden. This will keep that areas dry and let the water drain through to the ground below.

Catch the water in a bucket and use it to water plants in the yard.

Place a birdbath under it... either on a pedestal or just the bowl part on the ground.

Don't plant anything to close to the air conditioner. It needs plenty of airflow to work properly.

I catch the water from my A/C in an inground bucket and employ a sump pump to automatically water my Carnivorous Plants. It is a pure water supply and I don't have the stress of keeping my plants moist all of the time.
