How often is "keeps?" If once a day may be tolerable. If not then,
1. Restart 2. perform all the system tools on Windows like cleanup etc. 3. Run your virus checker and deal with whats found 4. if you have XP do the system restore to a time before you had the problem. Then if it persists its time to go to the guru (shop.)

Speaking as a representative of an IT company: nobody will fix everything for free - unless there's something in it for them. Watch out - many IT people have something to gain from "fixing" your computer for free.

On the other hand, you can carry it into a small IT firm and pay a small fee to have a legitimate technician fix it.

Also, your computer freezing may likely be caused by processor overheating which will not be fixed by running Spyware removers etc. You need a technician to look at it or try cleaning the internal cooling fans. DO NOT USE WATER! Use compressed air or a reversable Shop Vac. Hold one of the fan blades while you blow them out. You do not want them spinning out of control while you blow them out.

Try doing this lot first;
Uninstall any rarely used programs if you still have the installation discs, delete any files and folders you don't need, back up other data off the pc and delete the files.
Install Avast! antivirus, Ewido anti trojan, Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware and Spybot Search and Destroy and run each of them, preferably in Safe Mode.
Defragment your hard drive and run Ccleaner regularly on each account. To get it on the other accounts drag a copy of the icon and drop it into the shared folder.

Before attempting to remove malware you must switch off System Restore as back up files will be hiding in there, and it will just restore itself. Go to Start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore.
Run Avast and Ewido in Safe Mode. To get into Safe Mode repeatedly press the F8 key after the bios screen loads but before Windows loads. You'll know if you made it because the screen will be at 800 x 600 and your pc will be slow.

Then beef up your security. Its easier to prevent malware getting on to your sytem in the first place rather than trying to remove it.

The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Either of these firewalls are free for personal use and stop unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are allowed to access the internet. They are both fairly easy to use and updated regularly.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
