The bottom line is that new shoes do not smell like new shoes for long, just as a new car loses the new car smell shortly after you purchase it. You can do certain things to prolong the new shoe smell, like wear them every other day instead of every day, and be sure to wear socks with them instead of barefoot. Once you put the shoes in the washing machine, all traces of that new leather smell will be gone, and the shoes will wind up smelling like whatever was in contact with them last (your feet!).

Make sure your feet are clean in the first place. Do you wash them every day ? .. After you wash them .. you should spray them or place a medicated powder on your feet like, Gold Bond, (they sell this stuff over-the-counter at any major drug store). You need to wear washed, clean socks everyday. There are also sprays that are sold over the counter .. you spray it in your shoes before you put them on to keep things cool and smelling good. If you can afford it ... buy 2 or 3 sets of shoes and switch them around all week .. sometimes shoes need time to air out. If you rotate using your shoes .. they have time to dry out .. and there is less opportunity for bacteria, or nasty smells to form. Wear 100% cotton socks if possible as they will absorb a lot of excess moisture from your feet. If you do all this, it should take care of the problem.

Anti-fungal powder perhaps? This will help, if the smell is due to athlete's feet or some other version of the candida fungus (yeast).

If you want more info on yeast related skin problems there is some basic information on www.hufa.org.

Be sure to give shoes a rest. You must wear them only 3x a week, never two days in a row. This way, they get a chance to air out and let strange odors dissipate.

You can put baking soda in them to absorb sweat and odors, too.
