Simple. It's how the wealth is distributed. Most of the African governments are very corrupt, just like many of those in Latin America. The government has 95% or more of the money, and the remaining 5% or less is left to take care of the masses. This was the very situation in France in 1789 when the "lower class" rebelled against the government and the aristocracy. Isn't it sad that revolutions have to take place and so many people have to die for government reform in third world nations?

Corruption in the government. The majority of the aid received from other countries never makes it's way down to the people.
Post colonization, the leaders of the coup's or armies who fought for the freedom of the country generally became the leader. What started out as a good thing soon turned sour in the vast majority of African countries...and the hero's became dictators..
Another reason I think is that Africa was underdeveloped on many levels. Not sure if this was purposeful, haven't read enough in this area to make a decision one way or another,
but when African countries were under another's rule, they were generally treated as second class citizens....not offered the same education, etc.

While wealth is often measured in money, gold, land, etc... that is not the true gauge. Those are just the golden eggs. Knowledge is the goose.

In Africa, and many other 'third-world' nations, education is sorely lacking. Only those that are educated share in the wealth and they represent a small minority. To keep from having to share their wealth with the masses, they see to it that the masses remain uneducated. Afterall, an uneducated population serves as a robust working class.

Fact is, 'knowledge is power' is not just a catchy slogan to get kids to pay attention in school.

Um i think its cuz there totally separate S .Africa is separate ..like north America is from us............ok heres my edit....South Africa has experienced a significantly different evolution from other nations in Africa as a result of two facts. Firstly, immigration from Europe reached levels not experienced in other African communities. Secondly, the strategic importance of the Cape Sea Route, as emphasised by the closure of the Suez Canal during the Six Day War, and the mineralogical wealth made the country extremely important to Western interests, particularly during the Cold War. As a result of the former, South Africa is a very racially diverse nation. It has the largest population of people of Coloured (i.e., mixed racial background), White, and Indian communities in Africa. Black South Africans account for slightly less than 80% of the population.

Racial strife between the white minority and the black majority has played a large part in the country's history and politics, culminating in apartheid, which was instituted in 1948 by the National Party, although segregation existed prior to that date. The laws that defined apartheid began to be repealed or abolished by the National Party in 1990 after a long and sometimes violent struggle (including economic sanctions from the international community) by the Black majority as well as many White, Coloured, and Indian South Africans

so um ya, S ..Africa while the same country is a different nation according to that article...

because unfortunatly they have alot of debt...when a country has debt it uses what resourses it has to pay that back with interest ofcourse, which means it has less money to spend on roads, schools, bridges ect...so if it doesnt have the infrastructure to create wealth then it becomes debt ridden and poor.

All countries with widespread poverty have one thing in common.
No private ownership of land.
If you can't own land then you can't get a loan to improve it and then banks don't have money to invest in other businesses, etc....
