We had damage to several things in the house during a lightening storm telephone, coffee pot, furnace. Someone said there is a switch that kicks off when there is a surge? Is this true and how can i tell? someone is coming this week to replace my furnace.

It's a possibility that your furnace does not have to be replaced. There is a small button, normally on the back of the unit, called the reset. Push that several times and then see if the furnace will work. (This reset button is normall red), but not necessarily. It's very small so look good and you'll find one.

There are devices that block surges but you would have had to have one for the whole house to protect your devices.
