I'm going to do a combined degree of history and sociology at university. What careers could I go in to and could I take my qualifications abroad? (preferably the USA). I'm a resident of the UK.

A professor sounds like it would suit you. There are many many colleges and universities all over the US, so you could pick any state. You would just need to get certified to teach in whatever region you chose.
There are many jobs here also that just require a four year degree..the employer doesn't always care what in...
I would suggest picking the area of the country you want to work in, and then searching job sites to see what employers are looking for. The school you are in should be able to help you with this as well. I'm in Michigan, I can help with information here.
I think Professor though...we here in the states think of a UK accent as intellectual.

A UK degree does hold prestige in many countries - USA is one!!
I did Theology and Sociology, after graduating I worked in housing and then with ex-offenders. A number of friends in similar fields all studied sociology / social sciences.
