This is to run a DV cable for transfering data from my Mini DV camcorder. Also, what brand should I avoid?

they are all just as good as each other, if any of them are faulty you can return them under the consumer afairs act of 1984 ;)

DV is probably 4 pin firewire - most PC cards are 6 pin.
so check the size you need, or be prepared to get an adapter cable or socket

The Adaptec Firewire cards are the best. The Firewire 800 from them really screams for drive access and digital video capture.
