Notebooks and Laptops are portable computers but there is a minor difference between laptops and notebooks.

Laptop: A portable computer small enough to use on one's lap.

Notebook: A light, portable computer that is generally thinner than a laptop.

Even according to Webopedia, laptop computers are more frequently called notebook computers, though technically laptops are somewhat smaller in size than notebooks.

So, as a student, you might have to travel quite a lot. Therefore, I would recommend that you get a notebook which is more "portable".

If you buy a regular Note book it will only cost you about $4.oo -$5.oo.You can write in a note book using your pen or pencil, you can erase what you write using an eraser or whiteout etc. You can tear out paper from it to pass Notes( under the table) to your friend etc. You can put a hot cup of Coffee on it so that you do not get burnt. You do not have to lug it around. Nobody will want to steal it.

If you buy a Laptop it will cost u anything upwards of $ 700. You will have to charge it whenever the Battery charge gets depleted. You cannot write on it using a pencil or a pen. To do this you learn to type. You cannot tear paper from it to pass notes ( under the table) to your friends. You cannot put a hot cup of Coffee on top of it as it may melt the top Surface of the Laptop. You will have to lug it around in a bag ( which you will have to buy for another $ 25.oo - $ 50.oo) People may try to steal it ( when you are not looking ) if they get half a chance.

These then are the basic difference between a Note Book and a Laptop.

The term "notebook" is nothing more than marketing related terminology. Essentially both words apply to the same thing.
